Counseling Not Criminalization in Schools Act

Dear friends,

We are entering a critical few weeks in the fight towards police-free schools at the federal level and we need your support.

We write with an exciting update that the central piece of legislation highlighted in the Youth Mandate – the Counseling Not Criminalization in Schools Act – will be re-introduced on June 17th. The Counseling Not Criminalization in Schools Act, when passed, would end all federal funding used to place law enforcement in schools and invest $5 Billion into education  and wrap around services. The re-introduction of the bill marks a critical opportunity for us to rally support for this bill and get as many co-sponsors on it as possible to show that urgent priority of ending policing in schools. As we gear up for this introduction we are asking for your support in a few ways:

  1. Sign on through this form to this letter of support for the Counseling Not Criminalization in Schools Act by TOMORROW end of the day. Congressional offices look to letters like these to see if bills have the support necessary to prioritize this legislation. It’s a critical way to communicate to Congress that there is a movement of people watching and supporting this bill. Feel free to share this letter with your networks as well! The Youth Mandate got about 200 endorsements, our goal is to reach 300 sign ons for this bill by the re-introduction. Help us get there!
  2. Email me (kterenzi@populardemocracy.org) with whether you would like to participate in a week of action in support of the bill on June 28th – this will include a youth-led FB live, phone banking, local actions, and lobby visits. The more organizations and individuals who jump into this fight, the stronger we will be. We hope you will join us! We’ll send more information soon.

Next week, we will be sending tools and resources to share these messages out more broadly. We look forward to being in the fight with you all to both defeat efforts to further criminalize Black and brown young people, and to win the boldest piece of federal legislation we’ve seen to date to end federal funding for police in schools. We look forward to fighting alongside all of you.

Sincerely,

Kate Terenzi
